The researcher develops a theme of investigation for each season and takes the role as executive producers of the overall work.

Research contribution: The REAL series has developed links with television Community Broadcaster Channel 31. This work expands techniques within the research area of 'new media technologies' and also demonstrates to students' processes for making work and exhibition. The program is innovative because it combines learning and entertainment for a youth audience. The research objective is to integrate intellectual ideas, aesthetic concerns and practical skills into a creative work for public exhibition.

Research significance: Media and creative arts students are responsible for producing the work, which not only provides an invaluable insight into a media industry and the range of skills they would require in the workplace but also in securing valuable industry links. The research strategy is to integrate skills in long form media production whilst also providing students with the opportunities to learn first hand through leadership opportunities in a collaborative environment. This strategy is innovative because it combines a community approach to television production with student learning capabilities. The REAL series provides exposure (through excellent broadcast ratings and online exposure) to the work of a range of academics from several disciplines and has been awarded most outstanding youth series at the Community Television Antenna Awards.
