Gilchrist's 1825 revision of Williamson's 1810 Vade Mecum represents a substantial change on the original volume. Gilchrist removes much material he saw as irrelevant, or perhaps unsuitable, for instance the entire section on how to set up with a local woman. He also adds whole new sections on various topics he feels appropriate, such as language.
