Government response to reports in ‘Sunday Times’ regarding the influx of illegal Chinese immigrants |
Full Document Caption:
Illegal Chinese immigration was a recurring concern of newspapers during the White Australia period. The two clippings and correspondence in this file illustrate how the Customs department was concerned to do a thorough job. In response to an article in the ‘Sunday Times’, providing detailed information about how illegal immigrants bypass officials and with assistance from market garden ‘syndicates’, the Department confidentially defended its position and requested that they pass on any information they may have about illegal immigrants.
