1477 Chuck Meng’s certificate exempting him from the poll tax under the NSW 1881 Chinese Restriction Act

Full Document Caption:
Government taxes and regulations governed Chinese immigration and movements in Australia from the 1850s when they first began arriving in large numbers. This is an example of the certificates used under the 1881 Chinese Restriction Act in New South Wales. It is interesting to note that while most material held in government archives is in the English language there is still Chinese language material to be found on assorted items.
